Ebeneezer was the owner of the stable Charlotte hid in when she first ran away. When Ebeneezer found her, she asked him to let her work there in exchange for a place to sleep and food. Although Ebeneezer knew that Charlotte was female, he never told anyone else or discussed it with Charlotte. Charlotte’s way with horses reminded Ebeneezer of his own daughter who had died. When Mr. Millshark showed up looking for Charlotte, Ebeneezer told him that he did not know about any runaway girls. Afterward, he moved Charlotte to his new stables in Rhode Island. Charlotte worked for Ebeneezer for several years, and he taught her to drive a stagecoach. When Charlotte moved to California, she told Ebeneezer she would have a ranch one day and he could come and live with her. Eventually, he did move to California where Charlotte wanted him to create a way station on her property and run it.
