What metaphors are used in Replay by Ken Grimwood?

The narrative has a sense of unknowability. The replays that Jeff and Pamela go through over and over throughout the book are never explained. Jeff and Pamela try to think of explanations for them. Pamela speculates that they are being given a special consciousness so that they can be prophets to the rest of the world.
