The unnamed narrator spent a lot of time with his Uncle Adolphe as a child. These visits end when the narrator visits his uncle unexpectedly and and runs into one of his female companions. The event sparks an argument between the narrator's parents and Uncle Adolphe that results in their never seeing him again.
