Ruthie is the younger sister of Josef, and the daughter of Rachel and Aaron Landau. Ruthie is both a refugee and a savior of other refugees. And like Waleed, Ruthie forces her brother Josef to grow up. The novel starts with Ruthie at kindergarten age in 1939. She had “bright eyes, wild brown hair cut in a bob and parted on the side, and a little gap between her two front teeth that made her look like a chipmunk” (19). Gratz explains that she “carried her white corduroy stuffed rabbit, Bitsy, everywhere she went” (19). Her mother makes her keep her coat on and tells her she can not take it off until they get to Cuba. On the train and the ship, Ruthie is low maintenance and happy, often playing with the other children. She is sad and cries when her father is distraught and can feel the tension of her situation.
