The perspective is that of Mahmoud Bishara in Aleppo Syria, in 2015. Mahmoud sits in class, trying to be invisible. When class is over he tries to find his brother Waleed. Mahmoud is nervous because of the war, but Waleed is a robot without emotion. They walk home, taking a new route. They see two large boys taking a bag of bread from another boy and they hide. Mahmoud remembers one day he had protected his friend Khalid from bullies, but it had ended badly for both of them. He thinks watching the boys, “I should do something” but he and his brother walk away (17).
