Mariano Padron, Isabel’s grandfather, is the grandfather of Isabel and the father of Isabel’s mother. He is also the police officer who saves Aaron Landau (Josef’s father). He is also the police officer who tells the St. Louis passengers, repeatedly, they will leave the boat manana. Lito (as he is most commonly referred to in the novel) is therefore the link between the two stories. Lito is short for the Spanish word “Abuelito” or grandfather (26). Lito is protective of his daughter, Isabel’s mother, loves Isabel deeply, but thinks that her father is a fool. Lito and his son-in-law fight frequently.
