In this section, the ferry headed to Athens comes to get Mahmoud and his mother. It is a beautiful ship filled with tourists, who look annoyed and Mahmoud thinks, “They only see us when we do something they don’t want us to do” (214). He realizes that other people only really "see" the refugees when it is unavoidable... an inconvenience to them.
