Mahmoud's father responds to precarious situations by speaking carefully and refusing to panic. When the soldiers ask him which side he supports, Mahmoud's father hesitates as the soldiers cock their guns. Waleed speaks up saying “We’re against whoever is dropping the bombs on us” (69).

When the car is fired upon by soldiers, Mahmoud's father takes care to collect the phone charger before leaving the car behind.
