The essential message in this chapter is centered around invisibility, avoiding stereotypes in order to live peacefully.... to stay out of trouble. In this chapter, Mahmoud tries to remain invisible... to go unnoticed. Sadly, he is unable to do so. In addition, he and his family are noticed (told by the soldiers to fight for their country), and as a result, come to the conclusion that leaving Syria is their only hope.
