God's faithfulness is another theme. Angel's first experiences with God are not positive ones. Her mother did not have an abortion because she believed that it was a mortal sin, and she was punished for this choice by the man she loved. Then, when turned out in the street with nowhere to go, Sarah's mother is turned away by the church. When Sarah's mother dies, young and lonely, Sarah concludes that the reward for believing in God is vulnerability and abuse.
