Who were the The Cowboys?

The trio stop at a gas station and run into a couple of cowboys who are clearly not tolerant of people who are different than themselves. When Nelson tells the cowboys he, Jason, and Kyle are gay, the cowboys follow them on the highway, throwing beer cans at their car. Finally the cowboys spin out on a curve, crashing their truck. Kyle is badly frightened by this incident and ends up having a minor breakdown in the back of Nelson's car.
