Being true to yourself is a major theme in this book. All the three main characters are on the journey to self-discovery. The three boys in this novel, Nelson, Kyle, and Jason, are at various stages of discovering and accepting their sexuality. On the surface, it appears that Nelson's identity as a homosexual male is the most defined, while Jason's is the least. Underneath his public displays of confidence, however, the reader learns that Nelson is an insecure boy who is just as scared and confused by homosexuality as Jason. All three boys learn throughout the course of the novel how to be true to themselves and love who they are.
