Thomas Peaceful from Private Peaceful carries around with him the terrible secret of his father's death. When he and his father are chopping trees down, his father saves Thomas's life, but dies in the rescue attempt. Later, he and his brother join the army. Through a series of events that leaves his brother facing a firing squad, Thomas learns that his family already knew about the father's death.
