In Chapter Eight, Yanek experiences internal conflict when he realizes that his decision to visit a friends house, while his parents are taken away for deportation. Yanek understands that had he chosen to follow when he saw his parents in the square, the family might still be together. Though he decides to survive on his own, he has guilt about his ultimate decision.
