In Pride and Prejudice, Mrs. Bennet's sole reason for living, it would seem, is to marry off her daughters. So, when she learns that an eligible bachelor, of means, has returned to Netherfield Park, she is giddy with excitement. Finally, she might marry off one of her daughers to someone wealthy enough to help settle the family's debts.
