Pride and Prejudice

Explain the quote: "A younger son, you know, must be inured to self-denial and dependence."

I know that the eldest son inherits everything from his father but i don't exactly understand the quote as far as a second son's life, marriage, or anything like that.

Colonol Fitzwilliam is speaking from experience as he IS a younger son and will inherit nothing. He's stating that everyone would love to have their own way, but that only a very lucky few are able to live like that..like those who are rich (like elder sons).
