Growth is a recurring idea. There is growth and change from all of the Owen women shown in the story. The aunts had Gillian and Sally in a way that had made Sally believe that they had not been wanted. As it turns out, the aunts simply hadn't known how to treat children. They explain later on in the story that they have been watching Oprah and know how vital it is for children to know that they are loved.
