Let me start by giving this link to American CUlture in the 1950's

In the 1950's what people watched on TV was concidered as normal practice. Like in Pleasantville (great movie) there was the notion of the ideal family, ideal school and ideal neighbourhood in 1950 sitcoms such as Father Knows Best and I Love Lucy.

In the movie you can see that when they start becoming coloured the leaders of society try to stop it, wanting to keep their view on what is ideal, thesame ideals of 1950 society.
