The novel is divided into multiple chapters. There are twenty-six numbered chapters that follow Lynley and Havers on their investigation into the murder of Kenneth Fleming. There are also multiple chapters entitled Olivia in which Olivia Whitelaw tells her story. These two separate plots come together at the end of the novel with the revelation of the killer.
