Freedom is a major theme in the play. To be free in Lessing's play means to be impervious to the traps of conventional society, to see that the truth lies in other ways of living. Freedom, however, comes with a price. A lack of true intimacy and traditional loyalty seem to come at the expense of a "free" lifestyle.
