Who is Ida Stearns from Plainsong and what is their importance?

Ida Stearns is an elderly woman, who lives in an apartment in town. She isn't in good health, but she shows compassion toward Ike and Bobby their mother leaves them. Ike and Bobby discover Mrs. Stearns after her death, when they go to visit her.
