Who is Elizabeth from Permutation City and what is their importance?

Elizabeth is Paul Durham's companion. She assists him in performing some of his experiments in 2045, which lead to the discovery of his dust theory. She is not present in the parts of the book dated five years later, and her disappearance is not explained.
