In context, Manny loses a lot of respect for his father over the course of the story. Out of work, his father does not put family first, and he seems to be focused on wallowing in self pity. He doesn't look for a job, he spends what money they have in the pool hall, and he refuses the possibility of welfare. As a result, Manny grows up quickly and takes on a lot of responsibility.
