Artaxerxes is the only Persian leader profiled by Plutarch in this volume. He was the second Persian king by that name, and he was the son of Darius. Darius was defeated by Alexander. Artaxerxes fended off the Spartans by allying with the Greeks. He also participated in conflicts against the Egyptians.
