The imagery of the Englishman being haunted by the fog of his homeland represents how Hang feels about the village in Vietnam. As she is recalling this, she is homesick. But she knows what she is homesick for is dangerous. This image foreshadows the decision she will make at the end of the book once her aunt dies and leaves her the fortune.
