In the poem, the clothing metaphorically becomes a part of the speaker. They aren't merely a covering, but rather, an outer shell. In context, our clothing reveals our identity, accompanies us at all times, and protects us from outside elements. Our clothing stays with us all the time, and in the case of war, being struck down by a bullet.... our clothes will also bleed and die.
