Our Mutual Friend, Dickens’ last and darkly compelling novel centers on the presumed drowning of John Harmon in the Thames River on his way home to reclaim his inheritance of his father’s estate contingent on his marriage to Bella Wilfer. When Harmon is believed dead, the working class Boffins inherit the estate as Dickens weaves a complex moralistic tale about the complications of money and societal expectations upon all of their lives.
