How does the author use foreshadowing in Our Fathers?

In Part I, Chapter II, the description of the current condition of Hugh's building is an important foreshadowing of what is to come. Once a revered builder and always the picture of modernism, Hugh's physical body is not the only thing deteriorating, his buildings are as well.
