In Part Ⅲ, Chapter twelve, why does the mule jump?

When Little Sunshine and Joel emerge from Little Sunshine's apartment to find John Brown on the second floor landing, Little Sunshine demands that John Brown come down. Her demand is met by the mule's frantic leap from the balcony, which ends not in a crash, but in the mule's hanging himself when his reins catch around his neck.
