Other Voices, Other Rooms

Does Idabel like Joel? Why did she refuse him? What about their relationship?

Idabel is examining her own sexuality, thus, she refuses Joel, preferring to keep their relationship a friendship rather than a romance. Over the course of the novel, the relationship balance alters and Idabel adopts an even more masculine presence and dominates Joel both physically and emotionally. It is clear that Idabel struggles with her sexual preference and identity and finds herself attracted to a female midget at the carnival.
