what role does the handkerchief have at the end of othello?

Othello thinks that the loss of his mother's handkerchief proves Desdemona's infidelity. He accuses Desdemona of giving it to Cassio as a token of love. Emilia ends up explaining what really happened with the handkerchief but it is too late.
