Vivian's name changes several times over the course of the novel- from Niamh Power to Dorothy Nielsen to Vivian Daly. How are these changes significant for her?

Vivian's name is never changed by choice. As she goes through life, the people who take her in choose to give her new identities, as if a name can take away the young, Irish girl.... or even replace a lost, loved one with its use.
