From the start, we learn that Piper received special treatment from her counselor because she was white and middle class. Over time, she came to realize that the bunks were separated primarily by race and that those assignments were made by counselors. This served as an example of institutionalized racism, which played a large role in the lives of prisoners. In addition, most of the more desirable jobs at the prison were reserved for white inmates.
