In Part VII, Anne describes Sam's newly acquired crawling skill, which is quite interesting because she notes that he is crawling backward, which is contrary to the many other ways in which he is moving forward in his life. Her conclusion that the action is much more important than the direction is symbolic of her own life. While she knows that she isn't always heading in the right direction, the fact that she is continually trying is what matters most.
