While going on vacation in the slower-moving alpine regions of France, Belle is able to remain emotionally stable, and even hopeful, during the otherwise terrible stock market crash (287-295). France, plus the life of Belle's expatriate sister, Carron, represents the pursuit of a well-balanced life, as opposed to the frenetic and usually unsatisfying -- but far wealthier -- life in New York City.
