Christopher Columbus discovered Latin America, though he believed that he had actually reached India, and thus, he called the Latin American inhabitants "Indians." Columbus transplanted sugar plants from the Canary Islands to Latin America, and as a result, was responsible for creating the robust sugar industry, a resource that was not indigenous to Latin America.
