Ruby's Mother, from One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies, has died at the beginning of the book, causing Ruby to leave Boston. Since she's died, Ruby tends to see her through rose colored glasses. As part of her recovery in dealing with her mother's death she comes to terms with the prejudice of her mother.
