To Eudora, the only symbol with any weight is confluence which exists as reality and a symbol at once, such as in the last scenes of her novel, The Optimist's Daughter. The greatest confluence of all is the human memory. Memory is also a living thing that joins and lives in the recollection. Eudora Welty is a writer who comes from a sheltered life, which can be daring as well because all serious daring starts from within.
