What is the importance of The Pier in the novel, One Wish?

The Pier, which includes an amusement park, is where Tanya finds Ratty after meeting at the Wishing Tree. It is the most visited location in the novel, and the place where Tanya and Turpin cut through here to get to a secret passage into the castle dungeons.
