Delilah’s is gay bar where the roommates from Apartment 6F celebrate Christmas in July. The author uses the underground speakeasy, full of drag queens and artists, to exemplify Brooklyn queer culture. Delilah’s typifies the open and unabashed queer scene in New York City that is possible in the twenty-first century because of the people who fought for LGBTQ rights in the past. While the main character feels alone at the beginning of the novel, she discovers local spots, like Delilah’s and Miss Ivy’s, that make her feel like she is a part of a community. August learns that supportive spaces can help her to develop a sense of self and thrive in a large city.
