Augustine teaches that signs are symbols as opposed to things. Signs can be things or signs; for instance, a burning bush is a sign that is a thing; whereas, a word is a sign that functions only as a sign. According to Augustine, the sign-thing distinction is crucial to any proper reading of Scripture.
