Why is George considered independent in Of Mice and Men?

In many ways George is one of the only people in the novel of Mice and Men that is independent. With the exception of his brother, Lennie, whom he could have walked away from at any given point, he doesn't have any ties, no job, no possessions. He is completely independent of anything in society or in life.
