Both Candy and Crooks are lonely because they've both invested their hopes and love into an empty dream....the American Dream. Crooks worked hard his entire life trying to earn enough money to own his own place, but it never happened. Candy has bought into the idea that at some point the dream would be a reality for him if he just worked hard enough and had a good heart. In the end, it has left both of them lonely and bitter.
