The theme in Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham is that of disability. The main character, Philip, was born with a club foot. As a result he walks with a permanent limp. It is his deformity that has shaped his social interactions and his views of the world. It is toward the end of the novel, that Philip begins to realize that everyone is deformed in some way, and is finally able to see the good things that have happened in his life.
