Philip Carey, from Of Human Bondage, is the main character in the novel. When he was five years old his mother dies and he is sent to live with his aunt and uncle who don't have any children. There he is taught to be seen and not heard, and he has a hard time being a child under such circumstances. It is during this time that he discovers books, and it will be the love of books that he carries with him, and shapes his adult experiences.
