Hayward is an Englishman. Philip meets Hayward while he is living in Germany. Hayward has a large trust fund, which enables him to live comfortably without working. Thus, he spends his time moving from one place to another, enjoying the beauty of the world. Hayward and Philip become good friends, exchange letters, and see each other when they can. Hayward later settles in London while Philip is going to medical school, and the two see each other often. When war breaks out in Africa, however, Hayward decides to join the fight. He dies a few weeks after doing so.
