How is the limitation of time and isolation of space used to enhance tension in Oedipus Rex?

In the scene of the sinking ship, limitations increase the tension and suspense since the limits don't give the characters time to right the sinking ship. There's no time to figure things out and avert the disaster, though the audience is on the edge of their seats hoping that they will figure things out. Sadly, of course, they don't.
