What happens when Alexandra sees Carl in the garden?

When Carl Linstrum appears in the garden, he asks if he can stay with Alexandra for a few days. He is planning to go to Alaska to try the goldfields because he is not making money at engraving. Alexandra is delighted to see him and says he has changed from a boy to a man with a beard. He compliments her on the farm.
