O. Henry was in jail for embezzling. As I understand, he wrote many of his stories while in jail. He had to sacrifice his integrity to have money- he had to sacrifice his time while doing time in jail.

O. Henry served time in jail for embezzling. There was speculation he was innocent. Certainly this would impact his writing.
