Baldwin structures the novel in three parts. The first is mostly literary/film criticism, the second is personal and anecdotal, and the third deals with the expatriate experience. These divisions are a useful structuring device, but because the book’s major themes occur in every essay and because Baldwin’s thought is essentially of one piece, this structuring device is simply a way of giving the book form.
